Lando Klemann (2001) is a german artist and studies art at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel. His position is known for dissolving the boundaries between interior design, high fashion, and art, challenging the notion that interior design and fashion are not considered forms of art. The works are noted for their figurative, stylistic dynamics, which has a relation to interactions between high fashion models within surreal rooms.
“I’m inspired by my older paintings and the high fashion industry. Ideas are nothing else than many small ideas put together in a room. So if I take an idea of this room I directly have a second room. Tryin’ to show something you can’t explain is the biggest approach in my works. Often we have situations in our day we can’t express the way we would like to. A canvas has the possibility to make these situations visual to me. Im really happy about if people can find themself in my works. Even if it’s another situation in their point of view, it could be a memory of a feeling that is really important to them. I think we often forget to reflect the limited time we have. Take part of the moment and be thankful for it.“

OF
METAL.
“In the age of metal architecture, I think that I really hit the time frame of modernity, combined with timeless design.
I wasn’t clear about the metal interior or architecture design having an impact on my art. When I chose the cold, minimalistic aluminium fragments for framing my paintings, I just wanted to match my art perfectly with the right material, which supports my way of art. I talked with Wladimir Timler in 2024 about that. He opened my eyes in relation to that.
Sometimes you don’t know why you’re doing something. If you have this feeling, do it. When I had my first exhibition at “The Mission by heliumcowboy’’ in Hamburg (now renamed to “MEGA Contemporary,’’ run by Melvin Heikhaus), I was really overthinking and struggling with whether the metal combined with my art would be liked by people. Nobody did this so far. I learned one important thing: if you’re an artist and doing something completely new because you like it and are sure that this is the right decision in relation to your work, often others will like it too because it is something new. Doing something new is important in art.“

THE

03METAL WORKS.
When I started the chapter of including metal in my works, I couldn’t have known that this was just the beginning of something big. This is an advice I would give myself and also everybody: starting something can fail, but if it doesn’t, it could be the biggest chance in your career. The basic idea was just framing my paintings in a whole metal frame, as I was a little bored of normal wood frames. I also thought that the minimalism of the metal—the coldness, the clearness, and the small edges—matched much more to my art.
When I wanted to buy some metal angle strips to build the frame in our metal workshop, I saw a whole selection of “metal fragments” which are not dedicated to building frames. They are more about building houses or something like that. And then the question came to my head: what if the frame is not complete? Could this maybe support the expression of some sequences in the painting and give them room?
Room without a frame next to it so that the painting can breathe?
